The Saudi capital, “Riyadh”, was selected as the first Arab Digital Capital during the 23rd session of the Arab ICT Ministers Council, held on December 18, 2019, when the Council declared “Riyadh the first Arab Digital Capital for the year 2020”.
The selection of Riyadh came in concordance with the efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the field of communications and information technology, and the progress that the sector is witnessing, which has led to the establishment of an enabling and supportive digital structure, and in line with the pioneering role that Riyadh plays in adopting and disseminating the uses of digital technology to promote economic and social development, developing health care, improving education, and raising the societal well-being level for peoples of the Arab region in general.
HE. Eng. Abdullah Al-Swaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the Kingdom, affirmed in his opening speech during the announcement ceremony that awarding this title to the city of Riyadh comes as a result of the trend in the digital transformation that the Kingdom has taken in the framework of its Vision 2030, aiming at strengthening the role of the telecommunications sector in building a digital society, a digital government and a prosperous digital economy, pointing out that the Kingdom is advancing and making quantum leaps in the process of digital transformation, and it also plays a pioneering role in the total adoption of the latest technologies such as 5G and the Internet of Things, while intensifying the benefit from the fourth industrial revolution.
